Swimming, just like any other exercise, [helps/aids in] increase the strength and endurance of one's muscles. Depending on how slow or fast you swim, you can have a good cardiovascular work-out or slowly build your muscle strength and endurance. All the muscles in your body become involved each time you swim. Each resistance that your body receives as your body movement comes into contact with the pool water increases the endurance and strength of your muscles. You will soon get a fit and lean body regardless of how many laps or how fast you swim within a day.
Fitness experts, on the other hand, claim that swimming is not enough to increase the entire body's muscular endurance and strength. This is because swimming mainly concentrates on the upper part of the body and not too much on the lower part. In addition, bone density is not maintained because swimming is a form of low-impact exercise that is good for rehabilitation but not for bone density.
Fitness experts suggest that individuals who are interested in increasing their muscular strength should do land-based strength and weight training exercises, namely tricep kick backs, wide arm press-up, bench press, shoulder press, reverse fly, one-arm row, breast stroke, normal fly, lateral raise, biceps curl, lateral raise, close arm press-ups, and tricep dips. The other methods include bent leg raises, side-leg raise, pulsing abductors, wall squat, pulsing hip extension, front raised lunge, static adductors, standing rear squat, deep squats, toe touch opposite hand, moving squats, and one-leg squat.
Whether swimming or exercising, you do have to do warm-up exercises to keep your body limber. It is advisable that you perform the land-based exercise at least two days per week. Individuals, usually beginners, who perform these exercise routines would definitely feel sore the next day. Allow your body to recuperate by taking a day off or two days off from the exercise regimen if needed.
Make sure at all times that the swimming pool has been treated using pool chemicals and that the proper time has passed before you embark on your swimming routine. Private and public swimming pools make use of swimming pool chemicals to help maintain the pool in its original condition and keep water clean and hygienic. There are, of course, swimming pool filtration systems, which help to do the job, but the chlorine tablets are the main reasons why the pool remains clean and safe to swim in.
